SUMMARY:Bottle Tree Theatre’s The Recipe Book presents Ceremonies in Dark Old Men
DESCRIPTION:Bottle Tree Theatre presents\nThe Recipe Book: A Reading Series\nThe July Recipe:\nCeremonies in Dark Old Men\nWritten by Lonne Elder III\nDirected by Kamal Bolden\nClick here for tickets!\nLonne Elder III’s 1969 Pulitzer Prize finalist\, Ceremonies in Dark Old Men\, offers a powerful and insightful look at the aspirations and struggles of a Harlem family in the 1950s. Centered on a widowed father navigating his children’s varied attempts to find success and stability\, the drama uses witty\, honest dialogue to paint a moving portrait of an urban community. This compelling story captures the complexities of American life at a pivotal moment in history. \n  \nJoin an evening of imaginative storytelling and powerful performances as Bottle Tree Theatre brings this masterful script to life for one night only!\n  \n\n\n \n  \n\n\nThe Recipe Book\nA monthly reading series spotlighting new works by emerging Black playwrights while honoring lesser-known Black writers whose stories helped shape the field. \n\n\n\n\nWhy the Recipe Book?\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Recipe Book takes its name from the act of passing down knowledge—much like your grandma’s sweet potato pie recipe. If not shared\, it risks being lost forever. \nThis series honors that tradition. Each play is a recipe: rich\, cultural\, storied. We have the honor of passing down the work already gifted to us by prolific but lesser-known Black playwrights such as Shirley Graham Du Bois\, Alice Childress\, Samm-Art Williams\, J.e. Franklin\, and Pearl Cleage\, while also making room for the living history we’re creating with emerging Black playwrights. \nThe Recipe Book reminds us that art is not only communal\, but also a call to action\, a tool of hope\, and a blueprint for the future—one that has often already been drafted for us by artists who came before or who are yet to be discovered. The weapons are already in the house. We just need to keep them active—and pass them down. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Engine Room Staged Readings
DESCRIPTION:Rogue Machine Theatre presents\nThe Engine Room Staged Readings\nEngine Room Director: Tanya Everett\nFeaturing: Anushka Shah\, Joshua Labata\, Kamila Boga\, Zen Rame and Nariya Douglas\nClick here for tickets!\nRogue Machine Theatre is proud to introduce the inaugural class of the Engine Room\, a new playwright development initiative designed to support emerging writers ages 18-25 who demonstrate exceptional promise but may not yet have access to the mentorship\, professional connections\, and artistic community needed to launch a career in the theatre. \nSelected from a highly competitive pool of applicants\, this year’s cohort is currently participating in an intensive eight-week program under the leadership of Tanya Everett. Throughout the summer\, these writers will develop original one-act plays while working alongside professional directors\, actors\, and mentors\, culminating in a public evening of staged readings on July 19 at 7PM. \nThe Engine Room was created in response to a clear need within the Los Angeles theatre community: a bridge between youth arts education and professional play development that helps talented young writers find a creative home. The program provides emerging artists with the opportunity to hear their work brought to life\, build meaningful professional relationships\, and develop the skills and confidence needed to pursue careers in the theatre. \nThe Engine Room Staged Readings will serve as the closing event of Rogue Machine’s Playwrights’ Roundtable Festival\, offering audiences a first look at six exciting new voices and celebrating the next generation of Los Angeles playwrights.

Even now\, national data from The Count 3.0–one of the most comprehensive surveys of U.S. nonprofit theatre seasons—shows that women’s representation in produced work still falls short of parity… \nProgress happens only when institutions choose to make room for underrepresented voices\, year after year. We have the honor and responsibility to ensure that the stories we tell reflect the full breadth of who we are. Rogue Machine has always been a place where bold voices are met with trust and craft is taken seriously. I’m deeply proud of this Roundtable and grateful to Justin and Guillermo for listening and for making a year like this possible.” — Lina Patel \n  \nThe Playwright’s Roundtable is sponsored by the Los Angeles New Play Project.

Henderson’s distinguished career includes acclaimed performances in Fences\, Dune\, Lady Bird\, Civil War\, and A Man on the Inside\, along with decades of groundbreaking work on the American stage. \n  \n✨ SATURDAY\, JULY 11\, 2026 ✨\n \nSaturday’s programming begins with the first public presentation of findings from Support Black Theatre’s inaugural State of Black Theatre in L.A. Report\,offering a first-of-its-kind look at the Black theatre ecosystem in Los Angeles and providing insight into opportunities\, challenges\, and future growth. This community discussion is led by SBT Director of Education and Research\, Dr. Gregory A. King\, and SBT Founder and Executive Director\, Sophina Brown. \n \n \nSaturday Summit programming continues with a television and film panel featuring an inspiring lineup of creators and industry leaders\, including Anthony Hemingway\, Charles Murray\, Tani Marole\, and Aleshea Harris. \nEmmy Award-winning director Hemingway’s credits include Netflix’s Forever\, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story\, Power\, Underground\, The Wire\, Empire\, Treme\, and Red Tails. The End of Black Excellence follows a man who just may be the first Black person born without “Black excellence.” In his attempt to prove this theory wrong\, he puts on an (ever-failing) solo show to prove his worth\, value\, and connection with the elusive excellence that he craves. \n \nIn one of the Summit’s most anticipated artistic moments\, award-winning playwright and actor June Carryl will present a first look at her celebrated play The Good Minister From Harare\, recipient of the Saroyan/Paul Human Rights Playwriting Prize. The excerpt will serve as both a showcase of this brave new work and a launch pad for a larger conversation about the importance of new play development as it relates to the future of Black theatre. \nThis community dialogue will be led by Tony-nominated and award-winning playwright\, Dominique Morisseau\, known for her outstanding work including Pipeline\, Skeleton Crew\, Ain’t Too Proud\, Confederates\, and the upcoming Broadway production Mix and Master\, starring Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Kara Young. \n  \n \nSaturday evening will conclude with the Legacy Rising Monologue Competition. SUMMARY:The Robey Theatre Company presents What Had Happened Was…
DESCRIPTION:The Robey Theatre Company\, in association with Los Angeles Theatre Center\, presents a staged reading of\nWhat Had Happened Was…\nWritten by Reginald Edmund\nDirected by Ben Guillory\nClick here to RSVP for FREE!\nWhat Had Happened Was… follows Marcellus “MRT” Turner\, a passionate Los Angeles City Councilman and community advocate determined to create meaningful change for the people he represents. Told through a documentary-style blend of interviews\, memories and reflections\, the play traces MRT’s personal and political journey—from his early relationship with AV\, the woman who becomes his wife\, inspires and loves him\, to his rise as a public figure fighting for his community. \nWhen a powerful university expansion threatens to displace longtime residents and reshape the neighborhood\, MRT must decide how far he is willing to go to defend the people who trusted him. As he challenges powerful institutions and navigates the complicated world of politics\, he is forced to confront questions about progress\, power\, loyalty\, and the sacrifices required to stand by one’s values while dealing with the deceit and hypocrisy with some in leadership positions. \nThrough the voices of those closest to him—his wife\, family\, allies\, and opponents—the play examines the tension between personal ambition and public responsibility. What Had Happened Was… is a story about love\, community\, and the difficult choices that come with fighting for justice in a world where change is never simple\, and integrity can at times be at a minimum. \nCommissioned by The Robey Theatre Company. \n  \nFree Admission with RSVP! SUMMARY:Gil Scott-Heron Bluesology at HFF
DESCRIPTION:The Hollywood Fringe Festival presents\nGil Scott-Heron Bluesology\nCreated by Tuesday Conner\nDirected by Phylliss Bailey Brooks\nClick here for tickets!\nGil Scott-Heron Bluesology shares the life and music of the man Melody Maker called “The Most Dangerous Musician Alive” and many dubbed the forefather of rap music. Created by Tuesday Conner and Directed by Phylliss Bailey Brooks\, Gil Scott-Heron Bluesology is an extraordinary theatrical experience with a fierce band of spoken word artists and musicians spittin’ fire and blazin’ stages with the legend’s daughter\, Gia Scott-Heron and Special Guests Artists Father Amde Hamilton of The Watts Prophets with Victor Orlando of The Gap Band on percussion. \nWoven between the timeless words of Gil Scott-Heron\, this electrifying cast weave their own personal poetic journeys into the story and ignite a rip roaring fire. The ensemble includes the creator of Gil Scott-Heron Bluesology and Poets Jazz House Tuesday Conner; Conney Williams of the World Stage; Yawo Watts of Oralgasm; Lorenzo Frank from S.W.A.A.M.; ArtUs Mansoir a Multi–Talented Entertainer and the ORACLE aka Denise Lyles-Cook. \nWhat started as a one-night-only event for Black History Month in 2023 took on a life form of its own.  Initially co-directed by International Award Winning Filmmakers and sisters Tuesday and Lynne Conner\, Gil Scott-Heron Bluesology stood above 400 shows at the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2024.  Gil Scot-Heron Bluesology won the International Fringe Festival Encore Series Award. This launched them into a month long theatrical run celebrating Black History Off-Broadway at the SoHo Playhouse in New York City 2025.  The decision to elevate the show for a New York audience and entrust the direction of the production to director\, Phylliss Bailey Brooks resulted in igniting the fire higher.  Gil Scott-Heron Bluesology is not just a performance\, it’s an experience. \nYou’ll hear his words again\, you’ll cry and you’ll laugh and your heart light will glow\, you’ll fight back some tears\, you’ll sing\, you’ll know lyrics you haven’t heard in a long while and you’ll learn about the man…the icon\, the legend\, Gil Scott-Heron. \nGil Scott-Heron (1949 – 2011) was a civil rights activist\, musician and author known throughout the world for his work.  His gift of taking the daily news and turning it into social satire filled with truth\, and attaching rhythms that were in themselves thought-provoking was part of his genius. Gil professed to be a “BLUESOLOGIST” because his music was jazz and blues and his spoken word reflects the turbulence and uncertainty of our times with a satirical edge told in the tradition of oral poetry and storytelling.  In 2012\, posthumously Gil Scott-Heron finally received a Grammy for “Lifetime Achievement Award”. In 2021 Gil Scott-Heron was inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a recipient of the “Early Influence Award”.  Gil Scott-Heron Bluesology encompasses his creativity from 1970 to 2010. \n

SUMMARY:Uncle Tom: The True Story of Josiah Henson by Jeremiah Core at HFF
DESCRIPTION:The Hollywood Fringe Festival presents\nUncle Tom: The True Story of Josiah Henson\nWritten and Performed by Jeremiah Core\nClick here for tickets!\nMost people know the name “Uncle Tom” as an insult. It is slanderous within the Black community. Yet\, few know of the extraordinary man behind it. \nBorn into slavery in Maryland and separated from his family before the age of five\, Josiah Henson endured profound hardship. Holding fast to unshakable hope\, he escaped enslavement\, learned to read and write\, became a preacher and author\, met the Queen of England\, spoke at the White House\, and risked his life helping others to escape slavery through the Underground Railroad. \nHenson’s remarkable life inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin\, one of the most influential novels in American history and an inciting flame of the Civil War. \nThis powerful solo show reveals the true story of Josiah Henson—the man behind the legend—and explores how one of America’s most vilified names came to mean something very different from the real-life hero who inspired it.
