SUMMARY:The Last Acting Studio presents Racism and the Actor: A Conversation with Nicole M. Brewer
DESCRIPTION:The Last Acting Studio presents\nRacism and the Actor:\nA Conversation with Nicole M. Brewer\nHow Racism Shapes Your Body and Your Work\nClick here to RSVP for FREE!\nA free live conversation about how racism registers in the actor’s body\, attention and artistic choices.\nFor actors from marginalized communities\, there is often an unnamed force in the rooms where we learn and work. Even when no one names it\, the body does. Racialized stress can constrict the breath\, tense the muscles\, and consume attention—shaping not only how an actor feels in the room\, but the creative choices available to them. \nIn this free Zoom conversation\, Nicole M. Brewer\, author of the new book The Antiracist Theatre: Crafting Theatrical Collaboration\, and LAS founder Desean K. Terry will explore how racism moves through our classrooms\, rehearsal rooms\, and sets; how it registers in the actor’s body and work; and how antiracist practices can create the conditions for greater artistic freedom. \n  \nPurchase the book through Loyalty Bookstores\, a Black woman-owned independent bookstore.\n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: NICOLE M. BREWER\nNicole Brewer is a theatre director whose work has been seen at theatres such as Long Wharf Theatre\, Baltimore Center Stage\, and Folger Theatre. She is an educator with more than 18 years of teaching experience. Brewer is notably known as the originator of the internationally recognized Antiracist Theatre (ART) model. A leading voice in the movement to transform theater culture through accountability\, care\, and liberation-centered practices\, Brewer serves as acting faculty at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale. \nIn her debut book\, The Antiracist Theatre\, Nicole Brewer invites readers to consider the cost of business as usual and reclaim their power to challenge and shift extractive\, exclusionary\, and exploitative processes. Brewer creates space for readers to reimagine how creative spaces can function in healthier\, more humane\, and accountable ways. The book offers practical tools for building healthier creative environments where everyone can thrive. \nFor more than sixteen years\, Brewer has developed and facilitated anti-racist and anti-oppressive training methodologies that challenge harmful industry norms and reimagine what collaborative artistic processes can be. Her work has been featured at conferences and institutions across the United States\, Canada\, and the UK\, including workshops with Shakespeare’s Globe and the University of Cambridge. \nA dynamic speaker known for blending rigor\, humor\, honesty\, and deep compassion\, Brewer has taught at Howard University\, her alma mater\, the National Theater Institute\, and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts\, among others.

SUMMARY:Worthy by France-Luce Benson at the Un-Erasable Solo Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 2nd Annual Un-Erasable Solo Festival presents\nWorthy\nWritten & Performed by France-Luce Benson\nDirected by Sammie Wayne\, IV\nClick here for tickets!\nThe 3rd installment in Benson’s Haitian Revolution Trilogy\, Worthy is a powerful personal\, political\, and financial reckoning that asks: “What is the true cost of freedom?”\nWorthy is a wickedly funny\, brutally honest\, deeply personal solo performance unpacking the emotional baggage attached to what we earn\, owe\, and deserve. In the final installment of France-Luce Benson’s Haitian Revolution Trilogy\, she traces hidden connections between Haiti’s devastating “Double Debt” to France and the United States and the trauma that shaped her own sense of self-worth. \nThrough personal narrative\, music\, dance\, and multimedia\, Benson weaves Haiti’s economic history together with her complicated relationship with money\, creating something simultaneously intimate and epic. This personal and political reckoning confronts how shame\, ambition\, survival\, inherited grief\, and history shape how we spend\, save\, and value ourselves while asking one deceptively simple question: What is the true cost of freedom? \n

SUMMARY:All My Dads Were Gay by Jon Gentry
DESCRIPTION:Jon Gentry & Los Angeles LGBT Center present a workshop presentation of\nAll My Dads Were Gay\nWritten & Performed by Jon Gentry\nDirected by Shinelle Azoroh\nClick here for tickets!\nAs a Black queer youth from the American South\, Jon emerges into early adulthood across Boston\, San Francisco\, and Los Angeles during the digital dawn of the 2000s. Navigating public perception against private desire\, he confronts the lies he tells himself and others to maintain a mask of masculinity. \nThrough humor\, horror\, spoken and recorded text\, stylized movement\, musical interpolations\, and audience engagement\, the piece examines the paradox of discovering freedom in digital spaces while becoming increasingly constrained by their expectations. A tribute to Jon Gentry’s godfather and sequel to Black Bastard\, All My Dads Were Gay is a baptism by fire\, a millennial retelling of The Prodigal Son meets The Wizard of Oz.
