SUMMARY:For Freedoms presents AMERICA(!) THE BEAUTIFUL(?)
DESCRIPTION:For Freedoms presents\nAMERICA(!) THE BEAUTIFUL(?)\nA Night of Jazz\, Blues\, Hip-Hop\, and Poetry \nWith Artists: aja monet\, Marc Bamuthi Joseph\, Xiuhtezcatl\, and Kai the Universe\nClick here for tickets!\nJazz\, soul\, hip-hop\, and poetry combine for an eye-opening exploration of belonging\, freedom\, and civic life.\nFor Freedoms is thrilled to present AMERICA(!) THE BEAUTIFUL(?)\, an immersive evening of performance and civic imagination. Happening on Saturday\, October 3\, at 8pm (doors at 6:30pm) at The Ford in Los Angeles\, this gathering brings together a constellation of artists working at the intersection of artistic expression and collective action. We invite you to gather with us in a shared exploration of freedom and belonging through live music\, rhythm\, poetry\, and beats. \nThe experience begins with a live DJ set by artist-storyteller Kai the Universe\, setting the tone for the evening with fresh beats. Next up is Xochimilca recording artist and activist Xiuhtezcatl who treats ancestral knowledge as a catalyst for solidarity\, resistance\, and hope. His music pulses with urgency and possibility\, grounding in rhythm and purpose while calling listeners into deeper connection. Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s sermon-like performance will take time to reflect on the force of gathering and togetherness in America today. The night culminates with surrealist blues poet aja monet\, joined by a live band blending jazz and soul with poems that move between tenderness and power\, fragility\, and insurgency. Together\, these artists will transform the stage into a space of reckoning\, asking: for whom America the beautiful? \nThis gathering is the debut of a six-city roadshow series unfolding under AMERICA\, THE BEAUTIFUL\, a nationwide movement organized by For Freedoms and Future Currents. Each event is anchored in one of six American questions\, developed with Marc Bamuthi Joseph\, creating regionally rooted in activations that contribute to a larger national dialogue about democracy and belonging. The series will travel across the country\, weaving together local voices and creative practices into a shared story of who we are and who we are becoming.  \nProduced in partnership with The Ford as part of its FordLab Producers Program Series\, the evening is supported with promotional support from Future Currents\, Fall of Freedom\, and LAist.

SUMMARY:BLUE by SOUL
DESCRIPTION:One Institute presents\nBLUE\nBy SOUL\nClick here for tickets!\nSometimes the fragments make more sense than the line. BLUE\, the first collaboration of SOUL (Saunders/Outlaw/Udoh/Lyons)\, is a genre-bending new work of devised performance re-embodying queer legacies of blues music through music\, storytelling and improvisation. They will look to buried blues heroes of the past—including queer and queer-presumed pioneers like Elvie “L.V.” Thomas (1891-1979) and Geechie Wiley (1908-1950)\, Tony Jackson (1882-1921)\, Bessie Smith (1892-1937)\, and Billy Wright (1932-1991)—as they fashion a new blues for the 21st century in real time. \nWhere is our anguish\, where are our desires and pleasures that threaten and repulse\, where is the joy that somehow grows in inverse proportion to frustration and fear? By inhabiting and breaking the form of the blues\, this work will locate collective feeling in twelve bars and beyond. It’s a song of survival. A song for those whose stories can’t be finished.  \nCurrently in development\, Blue takes the form of a blues concert and will combine the direct testimony of the artists’ lives (in the form of concert “patter”) and the fictional narratives that bloom from them in the form of experimental\, cross-genre songs. Songs that begin with deep blues twist out of the blues tradition to take on new forms that reflect what the queer ghosts of the hidden blues past have become in a new queer millennium. Unnameable identities that found form in the blues become\, in this piece\, what no one could have imagined.

SUMMARY:Coco Queens by LaDarrion Williams
DESCRIPTION:Outside In Theatre and Blackgical Productions present\nCoco Queens\nWritten by LaDarrion Williams\nDirected by Jessica E. Williams\nClick here for tickets!\nCoco Queens is set in a small Alabama town during the 1970s and follows four Black women whose lives have been shaped by love\, loss\, ambition\, betrayal\, and sisterhood. Each year\, the women gather inside Gloria’s neighborhood beauty shop for Coco Queens Weekend\, a tradition filled with food\, music\, laughter\, reflection\, and healing. When long-buried secrets begin to surface\, they are forced to confront the wounds that have divided them and decide whether truth can help guide them back to one another. \nAt its heart\, Coco Queens is a celebration of the ways Black women and their communities have always created spaces to care for one another\, even in the face of forces designed to pull them apart. Through music\, memory\, ritual\, laughter\, and the simple act of gathering\, these women find the courage to lay down what they have been carrying and make room for healing. \nSet in 1975 Alabama\, the play honors the generations who came before while asking a question that remains deeply relevant today: How do we care for one another when the world gives us every reason not to? Coco Queens invites audiences into a space where joy is resistance\, remembrance is renewal\, and healing begins when we choose not to carry our burdens alone. \n  \nRUNTIME | approx. 2 hours \nINTERMISSION | 15 minutes \n  \nTALK BACK SERIES\nSelect performances will include the “Talk Back Series” pre-show and post-show conversations designed to further explore the themes of the play with the artists and creatives who worked on the production\, and the community at large. DESCRIPTION:The Robey Theatre Company\, in association with Los Angeles Theatre Center\, presents the world premiere of\nWhat Had Happened Was…\nWritten by Reginald Edmund\nDirected by Ben Guillory\nClick here for tickets!\nWhat Had Happened Was… follows Marcellus “MRT” Turner\, a passionate Los Angeles City Councilman and community advocate determined to create meaningful change for the people he represents. Told through a documentary-style blend of interviews\, memories and reflections\, the play traces MRT’s personal and political journey — from his early relationship with AV\, the woman who becomes his wife\, inspires and loves him\, to his rise as a public figure fighting for his community.  \nWhen a powerful university expansion threatens to displace longtime residents and reshape the neighborhood\, Marcellus must decide how far he is willing to go to defend the people who trusted him. As he challenges powerful institutions and navigates the complicated world of politics\, he is forced to confront questions about progress\, power\, loyalty\, and the sacrifices required to stand by one’s values while dealing with the deceit and hypocrisy with some in leadership positions. SUMMARY:Confederates by Dominique Morisseau
DESCRIPTION:The Fountain Theatre presents the Los Angeles premiere of\nConfederates\nWritten by Dominique Morisseau\nDirected by Raymond O. Caldwell\nClick here for tickets!\nTwo Black women. Two eras. One fight to claim their own power.\nSara is an enslaved woman who becomes a Union spy during the Civil War. Sandra is a tenured political science professor at a prestigious university today. More than 150 years separate their lives\, but the forces they navigate around race\, gender\, power\, and institutional betrayal prove disturbingly familiar. \nMoving between past and present with biting humor and theatrical ingenuity\, acclaimed playwright Dominique Morisseau connects these two women across generations as each must decide whom she can trust\, what she’s willing to risk\, and how to take control of her own story. \nConfederates is a funny\, fearless and provocative examination of American institutions\, Black womanhood\, and the battles we’re still fighting. \n \n  \n“For me\, this play was always about the legacy of white supremacy in this country’s foundation\, in its institutionalism. Trying to link this country’s founding with white supremacy has made a lot of people uncomfortable or flat out upset; as if it’s some ‘subversive attempt’ to try to shame the legacy of this country\, rather than confront its truth and deal with its impact on our present so that we can have a better future.”\n– Dominique Morisseau\n  \nSPECIAL PERFORMANCES: \n– Previews OCT 28 & 29 | 8PM. Living ticket prices: $5 – $40. \n– Monday Night INDUSTRY NIGHT Performances: Nov 9\, 16\, 23\, 30 + Dec 7 | 8PM. SUMMARY:Wine in the Wilderness by Alice Childress
DESCRIPTION:Geffen Playhouse presents the Los Angeles premiere of\nWine in the Wilderness\nWritten by Alice Childress\nDirected by LaChanze\nProduced in association with LaChanze Productions\nClick here for tickets!\nSet during the height of the 1964 Harlem riot\, Wine in the Wilderness unfolds in the apartment of Bill Jameson\, a painter determined to capture “the essence” of Black womanhood in his latest triptych. As friends take shelter from the rising tensions outside\, the arrival of a young woman disrupts Bill’s carefully constructed vision and exposes the assumptions\, judgments\, and hierarchies shaping both his art and his community. \nWith incisive humor and unflinching honesty\, Alice Childress’s play interrogates class\, colorism\, gender\, and the politics of representation\, asking who gets to define beauty\, respectability\, and worth. Under the direction of Broadway legend LaChanze\, this production foregrounds the play’s emotional immediacy and radical compassion\, revealing a story that feels as urgent today as when it was first written. \n  \nPERFORMANCE INFORMATION \nRunning Time: 90 minutes\, no intermission. \nWarnings/Content Advisory: This production contains profanity. \nAge Recommendation: 12+.
