“I will use my freedom well.”

Those were the words spoken by an escaped enslaved man, shortly before he touched the Canadian soil, as a free man. Uncle Tom. The slanderous name that is the worst thing to call an African-American. But what is the origin of the term?

Who was Uncle Tom? He was Josiah Henson, a true American hero. Born into slavery. Sold twice by the age of 9. Josiah’s life was doomed. But he never gave up. He became a preacher. He escaped enslavement by fleeing with his wife and their four children to Canada. He learned to read and write. Despite writing an autobiography, starting a community, and returning to the South, risking capture, he helped to free nearly 200 souls using the Underground Railroad.

That is Uncle Tom. That is Josiah Henson. Now his incredible story— the truth of his incredible life’s journey— is told.
