Mother’s Day — an O’Neill semi-finalist — is a surreal, farcical comedy about bitterness, forgiveness, and what America owes to those who built it.
In 1980s Baltimore, Martha raises her baby alone in a housing project. Strangled by the restrictions of welfare, she barely makes do with what little the government gives her. Her brother, Philip, and her boyfriend, Kevin, also broke, constantly harass her for what little money she has, while her best friend Lena gives her some solace. When her benefits are reduced by a scheming welfare officer, her hopes for getting off welfare dwindles. Then comes news of reparations for Black Americans, certain to change everybody’s lives.
