As a Black queer youth from the American South, Jon emerges into early adulthood across Boston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles during the digital dawn of the 2000s. Navigating public perception against private desire, he confronts the lies he tells himself and others to maintain a mask of masculinity.

Through humor, horror, spoken and recorded text, stylized movement, musical interpolations, and audience engagement, the piece examines the paradox of discovering freedom in digital spaces while becoming increasingly constrained by their expectations. A tribute to Jon Gentry’s godfather and sequel to Black Bastard, All My Dads Were Gay is a baptism by fire, a millennial retelling of The Prodigal Son meets The Wizard of Oz.
