Sara is an enslaved woman who becomes a Union spy during the Civil War. Sandra is a tenured political science professor at a prestigious university today. More than 150 years separate their lives, but the forces they navigate around race, gender, power, and institutional betrayal prove disturbingly familiar.
Moving between past and present with biting humor and theatrical ingenuity, acclaimed playwright Dominique Morisseau connects these two women across generations as each must decide whom she can trust, what she’s willing to risk, and how to take control of her own story.
Confederates is a funny, fearless and provocative examination of American institutions, Black womanhood, and the battles we’re still fighting.

Trying to link this country’s founding with white supremacy has made a lot of people uncomfortable or flat out upset; as if it’s some ‘subversive attempt’ to try to shame the legacy of this country, rather than confront its truth and deal with its impact on our present so that we can have a better future.”
