In a forgotten corner of a nonprofit theatre—somewhere between a prop closet and a spiritual crossroads—two employees find themselves tasked with an impossible mission: free the ghost haunting the space. Their only tool? The complete works of August Wilson.

Mara, a longtime theatre employee who’s seen it all, and Maisey, an eager but overwhelmed intern desperate to prove herself, must perform their way through Wilson’s American Century Cycle in a last-ditch attempt to release whatever (or whoever) refuses to move on.

What begins as a scrappy, slapstick reenactment spirals into something deeper. As they jump from Fences to Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, from The Piano Lesson to Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, the lines between performance and possession begin to blur. The audience is no longer just watching—they’re part of the ritual.

Is the ghost a former artist?
A forgotten story?
Or something the theatre itself refuses to confront?

Blending absurd comedy, physical theatre, and moments of unexpected emotional truth, The Complete (and Abridged) Works of August Wilson (Abridged-ish) is both a love letter and a playful interrogation of legacy, representation, and what it means to “honor” Black storytelling in American theatre.

Come for the chaos. Stay for the haunting.
And maybe… help set something free.
