Back On The Planet: The Spacebase Archives of Ras_G

and the Afrikan Space Program

Back On The Planet: The Spacebase Archives of Ras_G and the Afrikan Space Program is a look into the archives of Ras_G, the creator and universal being, through items gathered by family and friends documenting his short life on planet earth. The exhibition will include the spirit of the late Ras_G through his vast collection of records, music equipment, noise makers, gadgets, art, books, films and wardrobe. They look at not only the artists who inspired Ras_G but also his influence on the sonic scene of Los Angeles and beyond. Along with the exhibition, the William Grant Still Arts Center will offer an educational program, focusing on teaching art and music through the work of Ras_G.

An opening reception for the African American Composers Series will start off the celebration of Ras_G on March 30, from 3 – 6 pm with silkscreen artists Hit + Run making donation-based t-shirts and performances organized by Ron Stivers featuring Kahil Saadiq, Jimetta Rose, Linafornia and AshTreJenkins. They are in partnership with other exhibitions organized by Ron Stiver and Jah Orah and the 1st Church of Mycology. More details will be announced.

The Annual African American Composers’ Series

Now in its sixteenth year, the exhibition series celebrates the life and work of African-American composers each spring.

The William Grant Still Arts Center focuses on teaching music and cultural history to beginning and intermediate students of all ages through practice and playing experience via the works of groundbreaking musical innovators in the tradition of the Arts Center’s namesake, Dr. William Grant Still.
