Some evenings stay with you. This spring, SBT Founder and Executive Director Sophina Brown joined the extraordinary Dr. John Kani for a community conversation at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center. Dr. Kani shared reflections on a life in theatre and the power of art to challenge injustice, bring people together, and inspire social change.
As he wrapped up his run in the Geffen Playhouse’s production of “Master Harold”…and the Boys, Dr. Kani spoke about his relationship with Athol Fugard, his experiences under apartheid, and the deep connections between his artistry and activism. His stories offered a moving reminder of what it means to bring your history, convictions, and humanity to the stage.
It was one of the most magical evenings of our year, leaving those gathered inspired and grateful to spend time with an artist whose work carries such purpose. Special thanks to Tarell Alvin McCraney for inviting SBT to be part of this unforgettable event.
